Five-star rail journey launching 2026

Luxury rail travel is heading to Saudi Arabia, with Dream of the Desert set to become the first five-star service in the Middle East.

The train is a collaboration between Saudi Arabia Railways (SAR) and Italian hospitality company Arsenale, and promises to combine a luxurious travel experience with immersive cultural experiences.

Dream of the Desert will consist of 14 carriages with 34 suites, with interiors inspired by traditional Saudi architecture and motifs.

The train will depart from Riyadh, and explore SAR’s Northern Railway network. The 1,250km passenger line runs northwest towards Al Haditha near the border with Jordan, and passes Majmaah, Qassim, Hail, Jouf and Qurayyat.

This announcement coincides with the visit of the Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni to the kingdom, reported Saudi Press Agency.

"The Dream of the Desert train is a testament to our commitment to this vision, delivering innovative solutions that elevate both the transport and tourism sectors,” said Saudi Minister of Transport and Logistic Services and Chairman of SAR Engineer Saleh bin Nasser Al Jasser.

“This project reflects the kingdom’s ambitious drive to develop world-class infrastructure while offering unparalleled travel experiences that reinforce Saudi Arabia's status as a premier global tourism destination.

“The train combines luxury, innovation, and cultural authenticity, setting a new standard in rail travel.”

The train will feature curated cultural programmes for passengers to showcase Saudi Arabia's traditions.

The Saudi Tourism Authority and the Center for Development Authorities Support are also working on itineraries that integrate with the train journey, providing a window into the heart of Saudi heritage.

"This project is more than just a luxury train; it is a fully immersive experience that blends refined design, world-class hospitality, and rich cultural traditions,” said Arsenale Group CEO Paolo Barletta.

“Working with SAR, the Ministry of Culture, and the Saudi Tourism Authority has been an extraordinary collaboration, allowing us to bring this vision to life in a way that authentically reflects Saudi Arabia’s beauty.”

Dream of the Desert is due to welcome its first passengers in Q3 2026.

Rail is seen as a sustainable transport solution and is taking off in the Middle East. Just recently, Etihad Rail, the national railway of the UAE, announced plans for a passenger service linking Dubai and Abu Dhabi. This service will eventually link neighbouring countries, including Oman and Saudi Arabia.
